MCA Sydney asked me to deliver a colour insight talk on 6 February 2010. I was chuffed to be able to talk about colour in relation to the works of Olafur Eliasson and the ‘Take Your Time’ exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney.
From my perspective, Eliasson is one of the leading colour theorists of the 21st century. His works prompt us to explore, enjoy and perceive colour from different perspectives. My colour insight talk focused on the idea that we all tend to perceive and be influenced by colour differently. Eliasson’s work often feature ‘radical subjectivity’. That is, we are immersed in colour in many of his works. This immersion means that colour becomes an enveloping part of the work. In doing so, we experience colour in a whole new way.
Along with viewing and experiencing colour up close and personal, we also experience perceptual effects caused by colour immersion. In this way, our experience of colour becomes part of the work itself.
After the colour insight talk, I gave the audience hand-outs which they took into the exhibition and were able to identify for themselves some of the perceptual effects that underpinned Olafur Eliasson’s works.
