I was honored to be asked to contribute information to an article published recently by Architectural Digest online.
My contribution focused on research findings relevant to interior design. Specifically, while hue is often thought to contribute to mood and ambience plus a sense of calmness or vitality in interior design, this is not supported by evidence. Color saturation and tonal value levels tend to have a greater impact than hue (Mikellides, 1990, 1996, 2009). Color combinations—in specific tonal value clusters—definitely have an impact on mood and ambiance.
