I was honoured to be asked to deliver a colour insight public talk about the works of David Aspden. There are a number of works by David Aspden in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, and this event coincided with the Sydney Biennale.
The use of colour in Aspden’s work is quite unique. Whilst he appears to use a limited range of colours, these often appear visually different because of the way that he juxtaposes them with other colours. This juxtaposition means that individual colours appear to change marginally due to the impact of simultaneous contrast. This is a visual effect whereby a colour will appear to change due to the perceptual influence of contextual colour/s.
